IFR: Special Regulations for IFR Approach and Departure SION / Switzerland / LSGS
with effect as from 23 DEC 2004
 


1. IFR restrictions in aircraft performance (2.22.1.1.3)

- One-engine-out ceiling for approach minimum 14500'AMSL
- Ability to fly a 6.00° glide path in approach or landing
configuration
- Max IAS for visual manoeuvering 210 kt

Operators with aircraft not able to meet these performance limitations are requested to develop a special procedure according to ICAO Annex 6.
These procedures are subject to approval by the Federal Office for Civil Aviation (FOCA).

2. Operations at night (2.22.1.1.8)
IFR night operations are subject to a special permission.
For operations at night, the following conditions need to be fulfilled:
- Rwy 25 must be in use
- Pilot-in-command (PIC) must dispose of an IFR airport
qualification "B" for SION (2.22.1.1.2).

2.1 Departures at night (2.22.1.1.8.1)
- For departures at night the Sion high performance departures
shall be applied exclusively.
- All aircraft to be operated under IFR at Sion airport shall be able
to comply with the published IFR procedure (2.22.1.1.3).

2.2 Landings at night (2.22.1.1.8.2)
For landings at night the following conditions need to be fulfilled:
- Aircraft shall be able to comply with Sion high performance
departures.
- DA/MDA mim 4600' QNH
- Visibility 5km
- In case of go around below 4600' follow Sion high performance
departure


Minimum Requirements for Pilot Qualifications


1. Pilot qualification (2.22.1)
Any pilot (PIC) wishing to operate under IFR at Sion shall be
instructed and qualified for the IFR procedures with an aircraft of the corresponding category.

1.1 Exception for IGS approach (2.22.1.1.1)
Only with the airport briefing completed if the following conditions are met:
- Radar line-up must be provided by ATC
- Visibility more than 8 km
- Departures and arrivals only HJ
- MDA mim. 8000'
- Ceiling 6500' AGL

For IGS approach with DA/MDA lower than 8000',
pilots shall be instructed and qualified for Sion IFR procedures by
the FOCA or by the operators designated by the respective civil
aviation authorities.

The instruction program must at least contain the
following elements (2.22.1.2.1):

- 1 written verification of the compliance

After the airport qualification "B", pilots will be authorized
to execute corresponding IFR approaches, provided they have
performed 1 practice IFR approach and departure at Sion during the within 6 months period (2.22.1.2.3.2).

2. Instructors

2.1 Company instructors
An experienced flight instructor of an aircraft operator can be
designated by the FOCA to perform the Sion airport pilots qualification with pilots of the same organization after he has made at least 10 approaches and landings as Pilot in command at Sion. Those 10 approaches could be reduced to 5 if he has previously made 10 approaches and landings on other aircraft types. The request shall be addressed to Sion Airport.

2.2 General aviation instructors
The Airport Authority is holding a list of all instructors qualified to
introduce other pilots for Sion procedures. Any pilot wishing to be
designated as an instructor for Sion aircraft and pilot qualifications shall send his application to Sion Airport. The candidate shall be an experienced IFR flight instructor and have the minimum number of approaches flown as mentioned above. The first introduction must be made under the supervision of an instructor designated by the FOCA.

Additional Important Procedures

1. Radio Communication Failure
- Set transponder on 7600
- Proceed back to MOT VOR, remain North of R-110 MOT VOR
and maintain the last assigned FL (MNM FL170)
- Then carry out the full Instrument Guidance System (IGS)
procedure

2. RADAR Failure Proc. in IMC during RADAR-Vectoring by ATC
- If RADAR contact is lost for more than 30 sec, ATC will clear the
pilots to proceed back to MOT VOR
- ALT or FL will be advised by ATC.
